Scoring and Judging
When most people think of gymnastics and the judges, they think of a performance being scored out of 10. However, the perfect 10 scoring system has been gone for quite a while now. The new judging system is highly computer generated and it is quite confusing for fans and spectators to understand. It is also quite difficult to tell from the score posted whether a routine was judged fairly or favourably.
B.) Where was the technology discovered/invented?The new kind of judging and scoring system came into pace around 2006-07. All judges, coaches, gymnast and spectators where all starting to get use to the new system right before the 2008 olympic games in Beijing. The FIG (Federation of International Gymnastics) came up with this new system to make scoring much quicker for judges to calculate.
D.) Has the technology spread to other parts of the world through sport (i.e is it used all over the world, in Australia only etc.)?This scoring and judging type of technology was created by the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG), therefore this type of judging/ scoring system is used all over the world as well as the new scoreboards and computer software is available for all countries to use for competition.
C.) Give 1 example of when the technology is used (e.g. in training, recovery, competition, officiating etc.)?This type of technology is used at all competitions including International, National, State and local club meets/ competitions.
D.) Give 1 example of groups that have access to the technology (based on affordability, availability, etc.)?All judges and competition officials can access this sort of technology for any kind of gymnastics competition/ meet. This technology can be found at a variety of companies such as Aussport and Acromat. You can also purchase or barrow these sort of equipment from the leading gymnastics organisation of your country, Gymnastics Australia and Gymnastics NSW for example.

A.) How does this technology work? The gymnastics scoring system is done with a panel of judges who deduct point for various different reasons. The scoring and judging system is now all computer generated unlike it use to be many years ago.
The new gymnastics judging and scoring system consist of - • Eight judges in total, distributed over two panels. • Panel A grades for requirements and execution, starting at 0 • Panel B deducts for falls and misses, starting at 10 • The scores are combined and usually fall between 13 and 16. A score of 17 would be considered exceptional • Coaches can request an explanation of the score and can file a inquiry, verbally and through video review • Scores are tabulated using computer software and are usually instantly posted onto the scoreboards around the competition arena. C.) Does the technology significatly help improve the sport in terms of performance, safety ect. Or is it just a fad?Since the new scoring system came into place, their have been many disagreements and arguments whether the scoring system improves the sport in terms of performance and safety.
Points for - Lots of people believe that the new system has improved the sport in terms of performance and safety as it allows gymnast to perform many more skills that are much more difficult then the ones that were performed previously. Some people will say that the system has made the spot much more enjoyable and exciting to watch. Points against - The majority of people find the new system stupid and extremely confusing. The new system allows gymnast to perform more dangerous skills and that is putting athletes in dangerous positions and is putting them at a higher risk of injury. People now find it much harder to understand scoring and they find it quite difficult to tell whether a routine was judged fairly or unfairly based on the score they can see from the score bored. |
E.) Show a photo/video of each form of technology in action.
This photo is an example of how judging and scoring is done in Gymnastics. This image also shows how the computer generator puts the final score through the computer and onto the score bored for athletes, coaches and spectators to see.
In gymnastics, the final score is determined through the new system by adding the difficulty score (D Score) and the execution score (E Score). You can See in the image that He Kexin’s score from the 2008 Uneven Bars final, is made up by adding together the E and D scores. Together these two scores make up the final over all score.
