Positive and Negative Impacts That Technology Has On Gymnastics
Three negative impacts that technology has had on the sport of gymnastics -1.) The increase of technology in the sport of gymnastics has changed the way many people can view the sport. The change and development with technology has forced the scoring and judging system in gymnastics to change, the new system is confusing for spectators and for non-regualr viewers of the sport to understand. Instead of a simple score out of 10, the new scoring system goes much higher and is much harder to understand.
2.) Technology has made the sport of gymnastics impossible to reach a perfect or near perfect score in competition. In gymnastics, a judges first opinion on what should be deducted or what shouldn't be deducted can easily be changed once they have re-watched the skills/routines over and over again on special devices that allow them to view footage from different angles and speed. An example of this kind of negative impact can be seen in the video below. The video above show McKayla Maroney's vault from the 2012 Olympics (team final). In the video, Mckayla performs a vault in which no one could visually point out any errors or deductions. The judges could only find fault in her vault once they had replayed it in slow motion.
3.) Another negative impact from technology being used in the sport of gymnastics is that the sport has become more expensive to participate in. The technology that is used within the sport of gymnastics has forced gymnastics into being much more expensive then what it use to be. The constant development of technology in the equipment, uniforms and accessories used by gymnast has made the sport more expensive for the gymnast and their families. The cost to go watch a gymnastics competition live is also now more expensive due to the coasting and running of technology at these events.

Three positive impacts that technology has had on the sport of gymnastics -1.) The increasing use of technology in gymnastics has allowed gymnastics to grow as a sport in general, Because of the increase of technology in the sport, gymnastics has become one of the most viewed sports at the Olympic games and people all around the world can enjoy watching the sport wherever and whenever they want thanks to the ability of television coverage.
2.) Technology has allowed Gymnastics to be much more enjoyable for spectators as the increase of safety technology allows gymnast to perform harder/ more difficult skills. The technology created for safety reason helps to ensure the gymnast are constantly safe, therefore the gymnast or the athletes competing are less cautious when performing. The more exciting the routines, the more enjoyable they will be for spectators. 3.) The technology of the uniforms and special accessories such as grips or hand guards has impacted the sport of gymnastics positively as gymnast are more protected whilst training and competing. The protection that Hand guards (wrist supports/tigerpaws) and grips give the gymnast help to reduce risk of injuries and allow gymnast to train for longer without feeling any or little pain. |
